Southern Toad (Bufo terrestris)
An uncommonly seen toad of the Coastal Plain of North Carolina, replacing the similar American Toad, which is found in the Piedmont and Mountain regions.

The ubiquitous toad of the southern United States, abundant in many areas. This one was found near pine flatwoods in South Carolina.

The Southern Toad (classified by scientists as Bufo terrestris) is about 3 inches in length. It has a knobby head and bumps between the eyes. The Southern toad is usually reddish brown in color with large warts behind the eyes.

The Southern toad is located from North Caroline to Florida and west to the Mississippi River. From the physical point of view it is a medium-sized toad with the length ranging from 40 to 90 mm, while females are generally larger.

The genus Anaxyrus was split from Bufo by Frost et al in 2006. Most references still use the long-established Bufo.
