Behavior:
These fish are uncommon. Available data indicate that spearfish matures at 2 years of age and rarely lives past 4 to 5 years.
Catch rates of well-studied populations of sand tiger sharks in Australia and South Africa have shown declines as a result of commercial fishing, spearfishing and beach meshing, requiring the introduction of management.
In the 1960s these sharks were almost wiped out due to spearfishing, over-collecting, being fished for their livers, which are rich in vitamin A, and for shark fin soup. They are still trophy hunted for their jaws, liver, and valuable flesh.
Anglers and spearfishers catch around 140 tons of leopard sharks per year in California. There's also a small commercial fishery in California that brings in an additional 30 tons per year.
South Dakota "Hotspot": Veeries are common summer breeders in Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills.
A famous spearfishing site on the Columbia River at Celilo Falls was inundated after great dams were built on the river. The Ainu, of northern Japan, taught dogs how to catch salmon as they returned to their breeding grounds en masse.

Swimmers in areas where dangerous varieties occur should leave the water quietly if they are cut; spearfishing divers should remove bleeding fish from the water immediately. In some places bathing areas are guarded by nets.
Billfish include the swordfish (sole member of the family Xiphiidae) and marlin, sailfish and spearfish (family Istiophoridae).
These fish dominate the seas as a top predator, but their pursuit and harvest by humans puts them under threat.
Queen Parrotfish & People: The queen parrotfish is fished locally in the Caribbean, usually by spearfishing and in fishpots, but is not of great commercial importance
