Black Spider Monkey
Natural born acrobat of South America

Spiders are not among the easiest animals to identify. Many bear no markins, or if they do the markings are identical to those of other species. The colours are just as useless in many cases.

SPIDER MONKEY & MAN
Throughout much of its range, the black spider monkey is hunted by man for food. Being both noisy and quite large, the spider monkey is an easy target for darts or arrows.

Spiders are the most abundant and diverse of all terrestrial predators. Spiders not only help control insect populations (including those insects that cause human disease), but they are food for other species too.

Spider monkeys are active during the day and are found in various group sizes from singly to about 40 depending on the scarcity or otherwise of the fruits on which it feeds. There are three times as many adult females as adult males in a group.

Spiders in this group appear similar at first glance to small tarantulas. Tarantulas, however, have elongate spinnerets, a larger carapace, and forward-facing chelicerae. Black widows are shinier and have red marks on the underside of the abdomen.

This spider likes warm climates and deserts. It is found in the southwestern USA as well as in Mexico and parts of the Middle East. Often the black widow will be seen under rocks, on cliff edges, or near plants where they can build their webs.

This spider hunts widely, finding prey on water surface, in water and on land. Occasionally they may capture tadpoles and small fishes near the water's surface, but they usually prey on insects.

The spider spears its prey with its long fangs, injecting poison into the victim which paralyses it. The spider crushes its meal between its strong jaws, which move in an up and down movement, injecting a liquid which digests the victim's tissues.
