In the meadow, look for bubbles of the spittlebug on plant stems, or colonies of aphids feeding on plant juices, or the curious eyes of a praying mantis perched beside you.

Adult Food: Sap and spittlebug secretions.
Habitat: Juniper-oak woodland.
Range: Southwest Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, west Texas, and Mexico.

Red bats eat mostly moths and beetles, but also dine on planthoppers, leafhoppers, and spittlebugs. When possible, they actively select larger prey.

They are also known as "jar flies". Cicadas are related to leafhoppers and spittlebugs. In parts of the southern Appalachian Mountains in the United States they are known as "dry flies" because of the dry shell they leave behind.
