Spotted dolphin females, Stenella attenuata and Stenella frontalis, reach sexual maturity at 9 years, males at 12 years. It is thought to mate year round. Calves are born in May and September following a gestation period 11-12 months.

 


Diet: Spotted dolphins are hunters who find their prey at the surface of the water, eating mostly fish and squid. They sometimes eat crustaceans.

There are five species of spotted dolphin. They are known for their acrobatic displays, leaping out of the water and flying through the air.

Atlantic spotted dolphins are preyed upon by sharks.
The typical family group of the Atlantic spotted dolphin can consist of 50 individuals but is usually somewhere between 5 and 15. They are very vocal and active at the surface.

DESCRIPTION:
The Pantropical spotted dolphin has a slender body, a long, narrow beak, and a dark grey dorsal cape and dorsal fin. Light spots cover the dark areas of the body.

The Atlantic spotted dolphin is seen in coastal waters from the Carolinas south to Brazil, usually staying within about 350 km of the coast. Another population in known from the Gulf Stream near New England.

They often travel with other species including Fraser's, spinner, and spotted dolphins. When traveling in groups, melon-headed whales are often tightly packed and change their course frequently.
