Description
The Spotted Turtle is a small turtle. The carapace ranges from black to a blue-black with some small yellow or cream spots. Adult males have brown eyes and a tan chin.

This relatively small turtle averages 3 to 4 inches in length. The number and placement of yellow spots on the shell is variable. The neck and head have yellow and orange markings. It inhabits wet, marshy areas.

Spotted turtle populations are declining in many areas because of habitat destruction and collection for the pet trade. The spotted turtle is listed as a vulnerable species by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC).
The Spotted Turtle, Clemmys guttata, is found in slow moving streams in north Florida. Its shell, legs, and head are black spotted with yellow. It may grow to 5" long.
