Atlantic herring have an elongated body that is fairly slender, a belly that is rounded (compared with that of a sprat, Sprattus sprattus), they also have no adipose fin this feature distinguishes herrings from the Family of salmon.

Common Murre: Feeds on polar cod, capelin, sprat, sand eels, small Atlantic cod, and herring; also eats marine worms, amphipods, shrimp, and mollusks.

Pilchards, shrimps, sprats, small squid are some of the catch. The parents do not come home every night but when the chick, which may have been on its own for up to ten nights, is ultimately fed by regurgitation, its intake is tremendous.

Food consists of small or medium sized fish, including cod, herring, sprat, sculpins, and occasionally crustaceans, mollusks, frogs, fish spawn and insects. Prey is usually caught underwater and is usually swallowed before surfacing.

More recently, guillemots have suffered from overfishing of sand eels and sprats by humans. Conservationists would like to see this controlled because it is believed to be causing hundreds of birds to starve.

Minke whales feed on krill; fish, including sand lace, sand eel, salmon, capelin, mackerel, cod, coal fish, whiting, sprat, wolffish, dogfish, pollack, haddock, and herring; and squid. Capelin are the dominant food item of North Atlantic minkes.

It is the largest living fish, growing up to 65 feet long, but feeds on the smallest of sea creatures-namely, zooplankton, small squid, jellyfish, and sprat plankton.

The Manx Shearwater feeds on small fish (particularly herring, sprat and sardines), crustaceans, cephalopods and surface offal.

It is also sometimes called "herring" or "sprat" in New Zealand. (So-called "common names" are very confusing!) It is often found in tidal flats and shoals in large numbers, and feeds on small animals and plants.
