The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is the smallest tree squirrel in its range and occurs across most of Canada as well as Alaska and much of the western regions of the lower 48 states.

The Fox Squirrel, Sciurus niger, is found in pinelands statewide except for the Keys and perhaps Dade and Broward Counties. It is gray, gray brown, tan, dark brown, or black with an underside ranging from white to black.

Squirrels are usually active early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Fox squirrels nest in holes in trees or build leaf and twig nests. They eat acorns and other nuts, buds, fruit, fungi, insects, amphibians and the inner bark of trees.

Squirrels have short forelimbs, with a small thumb, and longer hind limbs. The soles of the feet have soft pads.
DISTRIBUTION:
Prevost's squirrel is from south-east Asia. They live and make their nests (dreys) in trees.

Squirrels eat the seeds of various conifers, acorns, mushrooms, hickory nuts, walnuts and maple seeds. After eating, its not uncommon for red squirrels to leave piles of shredded cones, husks and hulls more than a foot high.

Squirrels are the most active in late winter, when the mating season begins. The males will chase a females, as well as, chase off other suitors. This ritual of chasing, occurs through the trees at top speed.

Squirrel monkeys fill an important ecological role in South America. These primates often feed on an assortment of fruits and as they travel throughout their environment. As they go, they disperse undigested seeds in their manure within 2-3 hours.

Red Squirrel
Mammal. Solitary animals, red squirrels scold intruders in their territory. They growl, screech, chirp, rattle, and buzz. Active during the day, they spend the warmer months preparing for winter by finding and hiding food.

Red Squirrels mate in early spring, producing two to seven naked, blind helpless young some 35 to 38 days later. They normally mate again in late June with a second brood born by early August. The first brood is usually reared in a tree cavity.

Fox squirrel home ranges overlap broadly, and, especially in the Atlantic and Gulf coastal regions, are often relatively large. Male fox squirrel home ranges are larger than those of females and overlap more broadly with those of other individuals.

Fox squirrels are important small game animals throughout most of their range, hence they are of decided economic value.

Flying squirrels are entirely nocturnal, inhabiting mature forests and parks, as well as other woodlands. They utilize the many cavities that are found in mature trees for nesting and winter denning. Unlike bats, flying squirrels do not really fly.

The Red Squirrel was first reported by Erxleben, 1777. In general members of this order are found all over the world, except for Antarctica. The largest living rodent weighs around 50 kilograms or 110 pounds, and this is called the capybara.

As with all squirrels, the Prevost’s is a good climber, leaping nimbly through the treetops in search of plants and seeds. It rarely has a reason to come to the ground. Its keen senses help it keep a lookout for danger, like eagles and martens.

Eastern grey squirrels like to eat hickory nuts, beechnuts, acorns, and walnuts. It also likes to eat maple buds, bark, and samaras, flowers, buds, tulip tree blossoms, apples, fungi, and a wide variety of seeds, as well as the occasional insect.
