Squirrels are common rodents that have hairy tails and strong hind legs. There are are over 200 different species of squirrels that live in a variety of habitats.

Squirrel, common name for many rodents belonging to the same family as the woodchuck, chipmunk, and prairie dog. The tree and ground squirrels include about 230 species and the so-called flying squirrels include about 43 species.

Fox squirrel home ranges overlap broadly, and, especially in the Atlantic and Gulf coastal regions, are often relatively large. Male fox squirrel home ranges are larger than those of females and overlap more broadly with those of other individuals.

Fox Squirrels are strictly diurnal, non-territorial, and spend more of their time on the ground than most other tree squirrels. They are still, however, agile climbers. They construct two types of homes called "dreys", depending on the season.

Idaho Ground Squirrels are only found in west-central Idaho. The Northern version is found in two isolated counties at medium high elevations, surrounded by forests and making their homes in meadows and in rocky areas.

The Red Bush Squirrel was discovered by Peters in 1852. It inhabits Mozambique, "Quintangonha", mainland near Macambique Island. This squirrel is endemic to South Africa.

Squirrels are usually active early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Fox squirrels nest in holes in trees or build leaf and twig nests. They eat acorns and other nuts, buds, fruit, fungi, insects, amphibians and the inner bark of trees.

Flying squirrels are entirely nocturnal, inhabiting mature forests and parks, as well as other woodlands. They utilize the many cavities that are found in mature trees for nesting and winter denning. Unlike bats, flying squirrels do not really fly.

The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is the smallest tree squirrel in its range and occurs across most of Canada as well as Alaska and much of the western regions of the lower 48 states.

The Red Squirrel was first reported by Erxleben, 1777. In general members of this order are found all over the world, except for Antarctica. The largest living rodent weighs around 50 kilograms or 110 pounds, and this is called the capybara.

As with all squirrels, the Prevost’s is a good climber, leaping nimbly through the treetops in search of plants and seeds. It rarely has a reason to come to the ground. Its keen senses help it keep a lookout for danger, like eagles and martens.

These flying squirrels possess very soft fur, which is too thin-skinned to be of any commercial value. They are grey brown above and pale grey below. Their eyes are large, dark and shiny and they have some webbing between their toes.

Eastern grey squirrels like to eat hickory nuts, beechnuts, acorns, and walnuts. It also likes to eat maple buds, bark, and samaras, flowers, buds, tulip tree blossoms, apples, fungi, and a wide variety of seeds, as well as the occasional insect.

Central American squirrel monkeys have large group sizes (40 - 70 individuals) in continuous forest. They are non-aggressive and egalitarian - neither males nor females appear to be dominant. Females are usually the ones who disperse to another troop.

The Mohave ground squirrel is one of the more elusive animals of the California desert. Their highly developed desert survival skills allow them to avoid the extremes of the hostile climate.

The Russian flying squirrel is nocturnal; it nests and roosts in daytime in tree cavities and dreys. They make long nocturnal trips to forage and return to the nest before sunrise.
