Squirrel monkeys are the New World monkeys of the genus Saimiri. They are the only genus in the subfamily Saimirinae. Squirrel monkeys live in the tropical forests of Central and South America.
Squirrel monkeys fill an important ecological role in South America. These primates often feed on an assortment of fruits and as they travel throughout their environment. As they go, they disperse undigested seeds in their manure within 2-3 hours.
Central American squirrel monkeys have large group sizes (40 - 70 individuals) in continuous forest. They are non-aggressive and egalitarian - neither males nor females appear to be dominant. Females are usually the ones who disperse to another troop.
There are two species of squirrel monkey (the other being the common squirrel monkey) and they are the commonest primates in the forests of Central America.

In South America, squirrel monkeys associate with capuchin monkeys.[76] This may have more to do with foraging benefits to the squirrel monkeys rather than anti-predation benefits.[76]

We ended up seeing five kinds: common squirrel monkeys, black squirrel monkeys, capuchins, red howlers, and one lone distant silhouetted white bald uakari. The one just barely pictured here is a common squirrel monkey.
Squirrel monkeys live in very large groups — sometimes over 100 individuals — comprised mostly of females and only a few males. Old World monkeys either live in all-female groups with one dominant male or in multi-male troops.
