Steelhead are often grouped or classified as to the time of year they return to their home waters or natal stream, i.e., spring, summer or fall.

Steelhead may overwinter in mainstem reaches, particularly if coarse substrates in which to seek cover from high flows are available (Reedy 1995), or they may return to tributaries for the winter (Everest 1973, as cited in Dambacher 1991).

The most similar species to Quinnat Salmon are other Pacific Salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) and Steelhead Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) which have a similar life cycle.

Rainbow trout that migrate to sea (steelhead) spend from 1 to 4 years in freshwater before they transform into smolts to prepare for life in salt water. Rainbow trout smolts lose their parr markings and become silvery.

Some populations of Oncorhynchus mykiss are called steelhead trout. Though they are the same species, they are anadromous (born in freshwater, migrate to the sea in adulthood and return to freshwater to spawn).

Fish living in the lake and moving into streams to spawn are known as "steelheads." They ascend tributaries in the fall and spring, spawn in the spring, and swim downstream to the lake.

The salmon shark, Lamna ditropis, feeds on fishes such as Pacific salmon, steelhead trout, herring, sardines, pollock, Alaska cod, tomcod, lancetfishes, daggerteeth, sauries, lanternfishes, pomfrets, mackerel, lumpfishes, and sculpins.

The steelhead trout is believed to be the silvery saltwater phase of the colorful rainbow trout. Rainbows and cutthroats are known to hybridize, and a new species, the Gila trout, combining characteristics of both, has been discovered in New Mexico.
