Southern stingrays have a highly flattened, disc-shaped body with no distinct head.
Docile creatures, they are equipped with long, whip-like tails with one or more razor-sharp, serrated barbs, which they use only for defense.
The southern stingray, Dasyatis americana (Hildebrand and Schroeder, 1928), measures about 2 m from wingtip to wingtip and weighs up to 136 kg.

Stingrays are fish with flat bodies, a long tail with at least one spine, and cartilage instead of bones. These rays are closely related to sharks.

The Pacific manta ray is very similar in appearance to the stingrays, only without the sting at the end of their tail. They have a large, spherical body that can attain widths of 20 feet or more.
