The striped hyena is generally considered solitary, but has some social organization. It forages individually and is rarely seen in groups. It does, however, associate in small family groups at the den.

Of the three species of hyena in Africa, only the spotted hyena and the shy and much rarer, striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) are found in East Africa. The smaller, and even shyer brown hyena (Hyaena brunnea) occurs only in southern Africa.
Wolves may occasionally encounter Striped Hyenas in the Middle East and Central and South Asia, mostly in disputes over carcasses.

Dog-like in appearance, the spotted hyena is easily identified by its spotted coat, short mane and unique gait.
Brown and striped hyenas are the other two. Although hyenas appear similar to dogs, they are actually more closely related to cats. They live throughout much of Africa and eastwards through Arabia to India.
The striped hyena, the brown hyena and the aardwolf all have a striped mane on the top of the hyenas neck that stands up when the hyena is frightened.
There are three types of hyena species, the spotted, brown and striped hyenas. They also live in groups called clans. These clans are dominated by the larger females and the clans can grow to have up to 70 members.
The striped hyena is smaller, and the closely related brown hyena or strand wolf (very rare) are shire and more solitary.
The spotted hyena is the largest species of hyena. The other species are the brown hyena and the striped hyena.
