Meerkats (also called suricates) are small, burrowing mammals that live on the plains of southern Africa. They are a type of mongoose.
The gray meerkat or suricate is a small mongoose. Its course hair is gray-brown to white-gray, often with a yellowish tinge. There are eight to ten brownish transverse bands on its back, and a dark ring surrounds each eye.
Meerkats (also called suricates) work together in numbers. A few will typically serve as lookouts, watching the skies for birds of prey, such as hawks and eagles, that can snatch them from the ground.
A meerkat is not a cat, but is a suricate, a member of the mongoose family. (The name meerkat is the general Afrikaans term for mongoose.) Although they sometimes sit up like prairie dogs they are no relation.
All in the Family: The meerkat or suricate (Suricata suricatta) lives in troops of 2-3 families each comprising a male, a female and 2-5 offspring in open country in Southern Africa (Angola, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa).
By Any Other Name: The meerkat, also called the slender-tailed meerkat or suricate, is the only species in its genus Suricata. A small mongoose, it lives in large social colonies made up of several family units.
