The Swamp Sparrow (Melospiza georgiana) breeds across most of Canada as well as much of the northeastern United States.

Swamp Sparrows are fairly common breeding birds in wetlands throughout northern Alberta south to the northern edge of the parklands.

The Swamp Sparrow is aptly named, as they are most often found in dense thickets of freshwater swamps and wetlands. They are normally quite solitary, and while they may be locally common, they are most often encountered as single birds or pairs.

This common winter sparrow is found in wet fields and ditches, marshes, and swamps of the UTC.
Swamp Sparrows have variable backs, a gray face and rusty colored wings. Often the crown will look "bushy".

Swamp Sparrow Melospiza georgiana. Common to fairly common in winter, spring, and fall in all regions. Found in freshwater marshes and shrubby and weedy areas, especially near water. Low Conservation Concern.

In search of these auditory-motor neurons, Jonathan Prather and other researchers at Duke University recorded the activity of single neurons in the HVCs of swamp sparrows.

The American Tree Sparrow and the Swamp Sparrow both have rufous caps, but neither of these breed in the Southeast. The American Tree Sparrow has a dark central spot on its breast and has more gray on the head.

This is a subspecies of the Swamp Sparrow that lives in saltwater marshes along the milddle Atlantic states.

Among the many sparrows found in the United States are the song sparrow, the white-throated sparrow (or peabody bird), and the chipping, white-crowned, vesper, Lincoln's, fox, field, tree, and swamp sparrows.
