The Tundra Swan, once known as the Whistling Swan in North America, is the most numerous and widespread of the two swan species native to this continent.

The Tundra Swan is from the order Anseriformes. Anseriformes are birds, with over 150 species belonging to this order. The majority of these are waterfowl such as ducks, geese, screamers and swans.

The tundra swan population is mainly threatened by human activity such as habitat loss due to development and oil spills.

Distinguishing Features - The mute swan is a large bird, measuring 1.4 - 1.6 m and weighing 9 - 13 kg. The wingspan is 2.1 - 2.4 m. Males and females are alike in appearance, except that the male is generally larger.

The majestic Trumpeter Swan is the largest of all North American Waterfowl. They average 1.5 m in length, weigh 11-15 kg, and have a wing span of 2.4 to 3 m. Trumpeter swans are pure white with black legs and large flat black bills.

Swan Lake is the only fresh water lake on the island. There is a 1/2 mile walk from the parking lot to the bird hide on the lake and it is good birding all the way.

Swan Table Manners: Adult swan diets are almost entirely vegetarian. Their long necks enable the birds to reach far below the water's surface to chomp leaves and stems.
