Swordfish reach a maximum length of about 4.5 m and a maximum weight of 650 kg. Females are typically larger than males.

Swordfish are large, highly migratory, predatory fish characterized by a long, flat bill in contrast to the smooth, round bill of the marlins. Swordfish are elongate, round-bodied, and lack teeth and scales as adults.

Swordfish & Billfish
Swordfish and other billfish are hunted for food and for sport. The indiscriminate methods used to catch them also puts additional pressure on other vulnerable and endangered species such as marine turtles and tuna.

Appearance:

Predators
Sperm whales, sharks, seals, swordfish, and marlin feed on Humboldt squid of all sizes, while gulls and large fish often capture juveniles.

Flying fish use their unusual flying talent to escape predators such as swordfish, tunas, and other larger fishes. Flying fishes eat small crustaceans and other planktonic animals.

Threats to Survival
: Predators include sea turtles, ocean sunfish, spade fish, tuna, swordfish, and other large fish. Humans, particularly in some Asian countries, capture and eat dried non-venomous jellyfish.

These sharks are taken in large numbers by longline fleets worldwide, especially in the eastern North Atlantic by Spanish swordfish fleets.

DIET AND FEEDING HABITS
Makos eat schooling fish, including tuna, herring, mackerel, swordfish, and porpoise. They are opportunistic feeders, eating just about anything.

Diet
The shortfin mako feeds mainly upon bony fishes including mackerels, tunas, bonitos and swordfish, but may also eat other sharks, porpoises and sea turtles.

Flying fish are thought to have evolved this remarkable gliding ability to escape predators, of which they have many. Their pursuers include mackerel, tuna, swordfish, marlin, and other larger fish.

Mahi Mahi is also a popular eating fish in Australia. Mahi-mahi is usually caught and sold as a by-product by tuna and swordfish commercial fishing operators.

Males can reach sexual maturity at age 3 but females usually mature at ages 4-7. Adult eels are preyed upon by larger fish such as sharks, haddock and swordfish and also by gulls and bald eagles.

Their flesh has excellent flavor and firm texture flavor. Mahi-mahi have become popular restaurant fare in many areas, sometimes eaten as a substitute for swordfish because, having scales, they are considered kosher.
