Teal (Anas crecca)
The Teal is found in North America (subspecies Anas crecca carolinensis) and Europe, Asia and Africa (A. c. crecca). It is partly migratory but in most of Europe it is resident all year.

My earliest diaries record watching teal in the Yare Valley at Postwick. The dykes, often spilling over the marsh all winter, regularly attracted flights of 50 or more of these smallest of ducks.

The teal eats seeds, roots, grasses and other aquatic plants, as well as snails, insects and crustaceans. It normally prefers to eat close to shore, often under plant cover to ensure its safety.

Cape teal are one of the few species of dabbling ducks that actually dive. They are capable of swimming underwater with their wings closed like other true diving ducks. Normally, dabbling ducks dive with their wings open.

Brown teal tend to flock at traditional roosting sites when not feeding although, during the breeding season, these flocks are mainly juveniles and non-paired adults.

Baikal Teal: Small dabbling duck with striking head pattern of pale brown, green, white, and black. Breast is pink with dark spots, flanks are gray bordered with vertical white stripes, and long scapulars are chestnut-brown, black, and white.

Cinnamon Teal
Anas cyanoptera
The Cinnamon Teal (Anas cyanoptera) breeds across much of the western United States and winters across much of Texas and Mexico.

Garganey teal drakes have a head with a blackish-brown top portion, a white blaze extending from above the eye to the back of the neck and brownish red on the rest of the head except for a black chin.

The most striking feature of the Hottentot teal is its blue bill. It is the smallest of the African ducks and one the smallest of all the waterfowl, weighing a mere 8 or 9 ounces.

Blue-winged teal have thrived in recent years with wet conditions on the prairies of the Midwest and Canada. In 1999, Minnesota hunters harvested more than 59,000 blue-winged teal.

DESCRIPTION: Greenwing teal (Anas crecca) are the smallest of North American ducks with a short neck and small bill.

Description
Distinguishing Features - Male: the breeding plumage of the adult male is unmistakable and very ornamental. It is similar and closely related to the Green-winged Teal Anas crecca, although slightly larger.

The Green-winged Teal (Anas crecca) is a small duck (10 - 16 inches; wingspan: 24 inches) overall grey with a cinnamon brown head and iridescent green patch through eye to back of head. It has a green speculum. The breast is buff and spotted.

Diet The cinnamon teal is a dabbling duck. It usually feeds in shallow water where it scoops up floating plants, seeds and even insects. It will also dive for food and eat aquatic invertebrates.

Redheads often parasitize; Mallards and Ruddy Ducks also parasitize, occ remove teal eggs. Clutches >11 may be result of parasitization. Pair bond maintained throughout most of incubation.

HOW ABOUT THOSE GREEN-WINGED TEALS?

Blue-winged Teal breed widely across the southern Canadian provinces and the north/central U.S. (Prairie Pothole Region), then migrate south and reach well down into South America.

The Blue-winged Teal occurs throughout most of inland United States during the breeding season. The species winters in most coastal areas of the United States, in California on the west coast, and from Virginia south on the eastern coast.

Ring-necked pheasants sometimes lay eggs in nests of other birds such as gray partridge (Perdix perdix), ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus), and blue-winged teal (Anas discors).

A visit to the Chincoteague Fish and Wildlife Refuge, can reveal an array of waterfowl including pintail, gadwall, merganser, wigeon, mallards, green-winged teal, blue-winged teal, Canada and snow geese.

The wetlands associated with the Indus river and its tributaries are the stronghold for two species of migratory duck in the Asia region, White-headed Duck and Marbled Teal.

Endemic to Laysan Island in the Hawaiian Island chain, survival of this nocturnal, teal-sized duck once rested on a single surviving female. From that precarious position, the species has slowly increased but remains highly vulnerable.

Hens may also lay eggs in nests of other ground nesting birds such as mallards, blue-winged teal, gray partridge, bobwhite, turkey, ruffed and blue grouse. Incubation, usually by the female, lasts twenty three to twenty five days.
