Arctic Tern
Only a handful of Arctic terns nest in Norfolk. To most observers they are a spring and autumn passage migrant. Breeding grounds are in general to the north of common terns.

BLACK TERN FACTS
Description
In breeding plumage, the Black Tern is dark colored with a black head, neck and chest, and gray wings. In non-breeding plumage the head is white with dark crown and naps; the underside is white and wings gray.

The Royal Tern (Sterna maxima) is pretty much strictly a coastal tern and is only rarely found far from salt water.

Tern wings, and even whole terns, were a common sight on ladies' hats in the late 1800s; intensive hunting for this purpose contributed to the species' demise.

This tern is breeding in North America and Eurasia, from the Iberian Peninsula to Central Asia. Birds of Europe winter mainly along the Atlantic coasts of Africa, from Senegal to South Africa.

Black Tern (Chlidonias niger)
Terns are gull like but slimmer, with pointed wings and beaks. In breeding plumage the black tern has a black head and underparts and gray wings. In Michigan they prefer open or swampy marsh habitat.

The Arctic tern is well known for its long yearly migration. It travels from its Arctic breeding grounds to its wintering grounds off of Antarctica. It covers up to 40,000 km which is the farthest yearly journey of any bird.

The Arctic tern, with its streamlined body and long, pointed wings, is uniquely designed for its long, yearly flight. It also has very keen eyesight.

The Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea) is a small bird that makes the longest migration of any bird. It breeds in the Arctic tundra (within the Arctic Circle), but flies to the edge of the Antarctic ice pack during the winter.

"The Caspian Tern is reported to breed annually at Sylt, an island of Denmark, on the coast of Jutland. M.Nilsson says it visits also the mouth of the Baltic, and is seen in the vicinity of the Elbe.

This species is State Endangered. It is in danger of extinction as a breeding species in the state of Illinois.

The Interior Least Tern is migratory, breeding along inland river systems in the United States and wintering along the Central American coast and the northern coast of South America from Venezuela to northeastern Brazil.

Largest, strongest, fiercest, least gregarious tern. Usu breed at 4-5 years. Larger clutches in n. Pacific coast population (6,000 pairs in 1982) nests primarily on human-made habitats and shows 70% increase since 1960.

The Least Tern is distributed widely in the world, but is seen mostly along coastal waters. On the west coast it is found in mid to southern California, and is not seen often north of San Francisco.

The Gull-billed Tern has a large range, estimated globally at 5,500,000 square kilometers. Native to North America and nearby island nations and introduced to much of Europe, this bird prefers forest, wetland, and marine ecosystems.

The Gull-billed Tern nests in colonies, commonly with large numbers of nests in an area. It often nests with Common Terns and Black Skimmers. Breeding habitat includes sand, gravel, or shell beaches, or some grassy areas of coastal islands.

This commensal relationship between the salmon and the birds is noted to be especially strong in such species as the White-fronted Tern, Sterna striata, Fluttering Shearwater, Puffinus gavia, and Buller's Shearwater, Puffinus bulleri.

Ichthyornis (meaning "fish bird") were 8 inch (20 cm) long, toothed, tern-like, extinct bird that date from the late Cretaceous period. It had a large head and beak.

Movements can range in length from less than a mile, for Eurasian milkweed bugs, for example, to the incredible 25,000 miles per year of the arctic tern. Migrations may only be seasonal or may take a lifetime to complete.
