Female terrapins weigh on average 2 pounds while the smaller males ½ pound on average.
Conservation Status
On the 2009 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the northern diamondback terrapin is listed as Near Threatened.

Female terrapins are much larger than males, averaging about 7.5 inches compared to 5 inches for the male. Females reproduce when they are between 8 and 13 years old.

Female terrapins come on shore in June and July to make their nests. They lay 3 to 18 eggs per nest (typically 11). The females then join the males in the deeper bays and estuaries, where they feed until hibernation.

Turtles, terrapins and tortoises are all in one order, called the Testudines. They all have a shell, though only certain species can withdraw their lead and limbs into it. All the many types of turtle, terrapin and tortoise lay eggs.

An adult terrapin needs at least a 60-gallon tank with a large basking area. Basking sites can be built using slate rock, river rock, etc., and should have a heat lamp to keep temperatures in the mid 80s Fahrenheit.

The Diamondback Terrapin was first reported by Schoepff, 1793. In general members of this order are found all over the world, except for Antarctica. Turtles can range in size from just a few cms, to two metres.

Terrapins are protected by New York state law and legally may only be taken August 1 to April 30 (possession out of season is illegal).

From that relatively short list, it was easy to eliminate all genera other than Pelusios, the African Hinged Terrapins, also called Mud Turtles (not to be confused with the American mud turtles Kinosternon).

British English normally describes these reptiles as turtles if they live in the sea; terrapins if they live in fresh or brackish water; or tortoises if they live on land.

Terrapins live in many of the pans and are very useful in biting ticks off the rhino's skin. It is amazing to watch as they dodge the rolling body of a rhino as they dine.
