THRUSHes of Europe
Thrushes are plump, soft-plumaged, small to medium-sized birds, inhabiting wooded areas, and often feed on the ground or eat small fruit. Most species are grey or brown in color, often with speckled underparts.

Thrushes
Bluebirds, Robins, and Thrushes forage on the ground and don't often visit feeders. Robins may be attracted to feeders by fruit. Bluebirds do use nest boxes placed where large open areas meet woodlands.

Thrushes migrate at night, robins and bluebirds during the day.
Thrushes build nests in crotches of trees, limbs and shrubs,
the bluebirds nest in cavities or bird boxes. They all lay 3 to 6 eggs,
usually greenish blue, plain or lightly spotted.

The true thrushes are a very species-rich group of birds and also one of the world's most common and widespread. Alongside the obvious thrushes are the blackbirds, fieldfare, redwing and some robins.

1 Thrushes (Turdidae)
This is a large family of passerine birds. In general most of its members eat worms and insects. In colder areas they eat nuts and sometimes in winter also berries. Most thrushes have long and pointed beaks.

The Thrushes, family Turdidae, are a group of passerine birds that occur mainly but not exclusively in the Old World.

Many thrushes and blackbirds contain imitative notes in their songs, not only of other birds but also of any sounds that may take their fancy. It is this imitative ability that proves so useful in improving their songs.

Song thrushes are less "go ahead" than ever-abundant blackbirds and tend to feed closer to cover. They progress by short runs or a series of hops with pauses and an always alert posture. Often the head is held on one side as if listening.

Song Thrushes often feed under or close to cover, unlike Mistle Thrushes that often feed out in the open.

Wood Thrushes forage primarily on the ground, eating a wide variety of invertebrates including beetles, ants, moths, caterpillars, millipedes, and isopods. Birds also feed upon fruits and berries.

It may also be noticed that in mammals and birds which hop on two legs, such as jerboas, kangaroos, thrushes and finches, the proportionate length of the thigh-bone or femur to the tibia and foot (metatarsus and toes) is constant, being 2 to 5; ...

It is quite similar to other thrushes. The Bicknell's Thrush, until recently conspecific with the Gray-cheeked Thrush, is very similar and may not be separable in the field.

This family contains the thrushes, robins, bluebirds and other species. The bill is generally slender and somewhat notched. The tarsus is usually smooth rather than scaled as in most members of this order, and their feet are strong.

Remarks It can be readily distinguished from our regular thrushes--the Hermit, Graycheeked and Swainson's Thrushes and the Veery--by noting the pattern of its plumage.

This well known British songster , like other thrushes, spends its time in thick scrub and woodlands. Its melodious song has been the inspiration of poets and song writers, despite the bird's simple coloration.

Hardier than many of the other thrushes, the Hermit Thrush is usually the earliest spring migrant and latest fall migrant of the similar thrushes.

Other North American thrushes include , the wood, olive backed, and gray-cheeked thrushes , the solitaire , and the veery or Wilson's thrush. The finest singing is believed to be the hermit thrush, which is a shy forest dweller.

The Robin is a member of the thrush family of birds--a family that also includes bluebirds, solitaires and thrushes.

When moving about, white-crested laughing thrushes keep up a continuous chattering “conversation' with each other. From time to time, the entire flock breaks into loud, boisterous calls, which resemble laughter.

Robins are the largest North American thrushes, and their profile offers a good chance to learn the basic shape of most thrushes. Robins make a good reference point for comparing the size and shape of other birds, too.

Brown Thrasher could be confused with Wood Thrush. Thrushes have spots not streaks on the breast and brown eyes (yellow for Brown Thrasher). The Brown Thrasher's long decurved bill also distinguishes it from any of the thrushes.

Bluebirds are small, beautifully colored thrushes. They're often seen perched in a hunched position on wires or fences in fields and open woodlands throughout central and north Florida.

Its easy for cowbirds to detect nests in that kind of situation, and that has been devastating to some bird populations, such as wood thrushes, but a boon to cowbird populations.

The Western Bluebird, like its cousins the Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) and the Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides), belongs to the Thrushes, a large family of perching birds that typically feed on insects and fruits.

Golden Orioles tend to be between 20 - 24 cm in height and are often mistaken for Thrushes and even green Woodpeckers when in flight. They have dark red eyes, and a fairly thick, pink beak that is curved slightly downwards at the end.

They are very vocal, the call being a trill that can continue for long periods. Crested Barbets are aggressive towards other birds in their territory and chase off both nest competitors such as other Barbets and other birds such as doves and thrushes.

The larvae then leave the tissues of the snail and take up adult residence in the bird. They are not highly pathogenic and are a normal part of many north american woodland habitats. In my area (BC) they infect varied thrushes and robin.
