The Tiger is one of the most impressive of the mammals, both for its strength and appearance. There are 5 living sub-species of tigers, but they are very similar in habits, diet, and basic physical appearance.
Tigers are the largest species of the cat family. Male tigers are generally about 8 to 10 ft (2.4-3 m) long, including the 3-ft (1.8-m) tail.

Tigers vary in color, size, and markings depending on their subspecies. Bengal tigers, which inhabit the forests of India, have quintessential tiger appearance: a dark orange coat, black stripes and a white underbelly.
Tiger Salamanders, although abundant, are one of the most secretive salamanders in our state. Nearly all of their time is spent underground in burrows of other animals or burrows they have constructed themselves.
Tigers are large, territorial Asian cats that are threatened with extinction due to loss of habitat. They have excellent eyesight and hunt prey mostly at night. Unlike most cats, tigers like the water and are good swimmers.

Tigers are generally diurnal or crepuscular where they are undisturbed, but they become nocturnal in disturbed habitats or near human settlements. They do not readily cross large open areas.
Tiger salamanders have a fascinating and adaptable life process. Typically, tiger salamander larvae feed and grow during the spring and early summer and metamorphose two to five months after hatching. However, some populations never metamorphose.
Tigers hunt prey of all ages and physical condition including animals in their prime. The favored prey of wild tigers is deer and wild boar. At the Zoo, their diet includes a commercial meat mix, solid beef, beef shank bones and long bones.
Tigers mainly prey on large mammals such as pigs, deer, antelope, buffalo and gaur, but they also kill and eat small mammals and birds. Tigers are solitary hunters which stalk and then ambush their prey.
Tigers, as with all top-of-the-food-chain predators help balance populations by keeping prey populations in check. When a tiger has eaten its fill, the abandoned prey becomes food for a variety of mammals, birds, and reptiles.
Tigers eat mostly sambar, chital, Red deer, Swamp deer, Rusa deer, and Wild pigs. Occasionally, however, they will kill a rhino or elephant calf. About one in ten or twenty attempts to catch prey is successful.
Tigers have always been fascinating to people, often embodied in culture and religion. The earliest evidence comes from 5,000 years ago, sculpted on seals of the Indus Valley civilization of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, now in Pakistan.
