Tiger Salamander
The Tiger Salamander (classified by scientists as Ambystoma tigrinum) ranges from 6 to 13 inches in length. It is thought to be the largest land-dwelling salamander in the world.

Tiger Salamanders, although abundant, are one of the most secretive salamanders in our state. Nearly all of their time is spent underground in burrows of other animals or burrows they have constructed themselves.

Tiger salamanders have a fascinating and adaptable life process. Typically, tiger salamander larvae feed and grow during the spring and early summer and metamorphose two to five months after hatching. However, some populations never metamorphose.

Tiger salamanders inhabit a wide range of areas extending from coast to coast across the United States and into Canada, and from central Nebraska to northeastern Mexico. They are distributed throughout Texas except for the eastern quarter.

The Eastern Tiger Salamander appears to be absent from the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin, and otherwise occurs in the southern two-thirds of the state.

From this table I learned that Mesa Verde National Park contains a bunch of herps that I have yet to encounter anywhere, including Tiger Salamanders, Western Chorus Frogs, Variable Skinks, Milk Snakes, Smooth Green Snakes, and Prairie Rattlesnakes.
