Oak Toad
The Oak Toad (classified by scientists as Bufo quercicus), is a very small gray-brown animal with a white or yellowish stripe on its back. Sometimes it will have black splotches on its back as well.

This toad occurs in most of the Columbia Basin utilizing a variety of permanent and temporary waters, such as pothole ponds, irrigation waters and roadside ditches. This species spends most of its life underground, preferring sandy habitats.

This toad breeds from March to May. They lay a string of eggs similar to the Common Toads, but distinguishable as the string contains a single row of eggs unlike the double row typical of Bufo bufo. The tadpoles metamorphose in June and July.

This toad prefers areas of ample moisture and cover. It is found near ponds with fallen logs and other debris.
Behavior:
It feeds mainly on ants, but eats a variety of insects. It remains underground or hidden in debris during the day.

The cane toad is simply kept in captivity, when provided with a few basic requirements. A large plastic bin will work as an enclosure, but the lid must be modified to allow for ventilation.

DESCRIPTION: Normally 2-3 1/2 inches. Is sometimes confused with Fowlers Toad, occasionally the two hybridize. The American Toad has only one or warts in each of the larger dark spots.
