Tokay geckos are one of the largest gecko species—they are about 14 inches long. Their skin is generally gray with several reddish spots or flecks. It is possible to see straight through the head of the geckos from one ear hole to the other.

Tokay geckos are attractive physically and draw hobbyists to them based on sight alone. That's unfortunate because the Tokay gecko's attitude doesn't match its good looks.

Tokay Geckoes are solitary creatures, only encountering the opposite sex during the breeding season. They are territorial and will defend their space against intruders of the same species and of other species, ensuring less competition for food.

The Tokay Gecko, Gekko gekko, is a native of Asia now found in Dade County. It is blue green with rust colored spots. It grows to 14" or more. It is nocturnal and feeds on anything small enough for it to attack. It has a nasty bite.

Tokay geckos are commonly offered as pets - but their fierce bite makes them a potentially painful companion. Most captive tokays have been wild caught.

The skin of the tokay gecko feels soft and velvety. It's covered with scales, but the edges are flush with one another and do not overlap as in other lizards and snakes.

Known as the 'tigers' of the gecko world, Tokay geckos are very aggressive, often backing up their 'bark' with a painful bite. The tail is used to store fat, but will break off along a fracture plane if the gecko is threatened.
