Topi
Taxonomy Damaliscus lunatus [Burchell, 1823]. Citation: Travels in Interior of Southern Africa, 2:334 [1824]. Type locality: South Africa, Cape Province, Matlhawareng River, NE of Kuruman.

The topi is a medium-sized antelope with a striking reddish-brown to purplish-red coat that is glossy, even iridescent in bright sunlight. Distinct black patches appear on the face, the upper forelegs and on the hips and thighs.

Imports: Blackbuck antelope have been imported into the United States, primarily for the purpose of "exotic game hunts," common and popular in Texas. There are no true antelope native to the Americas.

The yearly migrations of huge herds of white-eared kob, tiang (topi), and Mongalla gazelle in Southern Sudan rival that of wildebeest on the famed Serengeti Plains.

Diet: Hyenas are primarily meat-eaters; they eat wildebeest (gnu), zebra, gazelle, buffalo, topi, eggs, insects, and fruit. Although they often kill prey, they are also scavengers, eating dead animals that they find.

Hyenas -- Nature's Gangsters shows dramatic proof of this when a hyena hangs onto a full-grown topi antelope by its jaws alone while the topi leaps, lunges and spins in a futile effort to throw off its captor.

The typical diet for the Hyena are zebras, wildebeest, buffalo and topi. Although many people view the hyena as a scavenger it is mostly a hunter. They can hunt alone or in a group called a clan if they are hunting large prey.

The common name "Seriema" derives from the Latin name "Cariama". However, locally it is thought that Cariama is the Topi Indian name for "The one who wears an erect crest".

There are over 200 species of colorful tanagers found from Canada all the way from Argentina. The name tanager comes from the Topi Indian language of Brazil.

Some antelopes include the gazelle, eland, impala, springbok, klipspringer, oryx, saiga, waterbuck, suni, hartebeests, topi, nyala, bongo, dik-dik, kob, duiker, gemsbok, etc. They are hunted by lions, leopards, wild dogs, and other predators.
