Turtle, Tortoise, or Terrapin: How to Tell the Difference
Veterinary Services Department, Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc.
Holly Nash, DVM, MS ...

Tortoises or land turtles are land-dwelling reptiles of the family of Testudinidae, order Testudines. Like their marine cousins, the sea turtles, tortoises are shielded from predators by a shell.

Tortoises have been on Earth a very long time, dating back at least 200 million years, which means they shared the planet with dinosaurs. Galapagos tortoises are the largest living tortoises, and they can live 150-200 years.

Tortoises have stumpy legs. Most have a high dome-shaped shell. There are about 40 different kinds of tortoise. Some live in hot desert areas, others live in mountains or forests.

Tortoises as large as the spurred tortoise once roamed all the major continents and became extinct relatively recently.

Tortoises are almost half bone and shell, so they have a great need for calcium. In order to absorb all the calcium they require, calcium levels in their diet must exceed phosphorus levels.

Big Tortoise, Big Impact
Giant tortoises dramatically alter their habitat.

The tortoises are now listed as endangered and have been strictly protected by the Ecuadorian government since 1970. Captive breeding efforts by the Charles Darwin Research Station are also having positive effects.

This tortoise grows to between 12 and 17 inches in length. Males are slightly larger than females and have longer, wider tails. The thick, heavy shell is part of the skeleton and is made up of about 60 bones covered by plates called scutes.

Giant Tortoise
Reptile. The giant dome-shaped tortoise has the longest lifespan of all vertebrates. Their sleeping, feeding, and nesting behaviors are very habitual.

These tortoises are fully protected within the Galapagos National Park, which was established by Ecuador in 1959 (discover).
