When did you last see any tree sparrows? The question is regularly posed. One occasion for myself was with a small group as we walked along a green trackway at Choseley, near Titchwell.

Tree Sparrows are also subject to bacterial and viral infections. Bacteria have been shown to be an important factor in the failure of eggs to hatch and in nestling mortality,[63] and mass deaths due to Salmonella infection have been noted in Japan.

The tree sparrow is scarcer in the uplands, and the far north and west of the UK. The main populations are now found across the Midlands, southern and eastern England. It is almost absent from the south west, Wales and the north west.

American Tree Sparrows are similar to other sparrows with rusty crowns but have a black spot on the breast. Chipping Sparrow has a white supercilium and black eye line. Field Sparrow has a pink bill and white eye ring.

American Tree Sparrows are northern breeders whose range does not extend quite far enough south to reach Alberta, although they do breed in northern B.C. and northern Saskatchewan.

The American Tree Sparrow (Spizella arborea) is a common, migrating songbird that lives in much of North America. It breeds in northern Canada but winters in the United States. Its song is a rapid, chirping warble.

In winter the Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) often appears in large numbers.
The Hedge Sparrow looks like both species of Sparrows and even shares the same name but actually it belongs to an entire different family of birds.

They were named for their resemblance to the English sparrow and the European tree sparrow (members of the weaver bird family), both introduced in the Americas. Members of both groups have stout, conical beaks adapted to seed eating.
