Description: The tree swallow is about five inches long. It has a forked tail, metallic green to blue head, back and wing feathers and white feathers on its underside.

Tree Swallows are common throughout North Carolina during migration. They also breed in the Mountain region and in dead trees in the large man-made lakes in the Piedmont.

The Tree Swallow breeds in Canada, Alaska and most of the rest of the USA while it winters in the southern USA, Central America and the West Indies. It breeds in open areas near water and nests in tree holes.

We often see the Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) in little wooden bird houses, which they seem almost to prefer to natural cavities.

Tree Swallow Tachycineta bicolor. Breeder. Common in winter, spring, and fall in Gulf Coast region. In Inland Coastal Plain, common in fall, fairly common in spring, and rare in winter.

Purple Martins and Tree Swallows feed primarily on flying insects. Purple Martins are cavity nesters and will nest in gourds and elaborate martin houses as well as nest boxes. Both prefer open areas near water.

Duck feathers are not evidence of duck usage as tree swallows and starlings bring feathers in to line their nests.
