Tuataras are nocturnal burrowing reptiles that inhabit coastal forests where they forage over a home range and feed on bird eggs, chicks, invertebrates, amphibians, and small reptiles.

Often referred to as 'living fossils' because they are the only surviving members of the rhynchocephalid reptiles, tuataras are in fact very advanced.

Tuatara are greenish brown, and measure up to 80 cm from head to tail-tip with a spiny crest along the back, especially pronounced in males.

Squamates are a monophyletic group that is a sister group to the tuatara. The squamates and tuatara together are a sister group to crocodiles and birds, the extant archosaurs.

We went over to their museum where they had some great Maori artifacts and breeding program for Tuatara. We were lucky enough to walk in when the curator was giving a chat to a school group about the tuatara and what they were doing at the museum.

Snakes, lizards, crocodilians, and tuataras all have teeth. The teeth vary in their form, their attachment, and whether they are shed. Generally, the teeth of herbivorous species are broadly flattened with crushing surfaces.

I visited the Invercargill museum where the main attraction is the living Tuatara exhibit. The Tuatara is a reptile that looks like an ordinary lizard, but actually belongs to the order Sphenodontia most of which became extinct with the dinosaurs.
