Bluefin tuna have been eaten by humans for centuries. However, in the 1970s, demand and prices for large bluefins soared worldwide, particularly in Japan, and commercial fishing operations found new ways to find and catch these sleek giants.

Yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, travel long distances. Migratory patterns have shown distances traveled from the US Pacific Coast to Japan. They are pelagic fish found from 1-250 m deep.

The bluefin tuna is a big fish! It can reach over three metres in length and weigh over 600 kg. Plus, it's a fast swimmer, reaching speeds of over 80 km per hour, about the speed limit on country roads.

Masked Boobies are known to associate with dolphin/tuna schools. The tuna probably drive this association by concentrating and chasing prey fish to the sea surface.

I am aware of the confrontation between Japan and Australia regarding the fisheries of the bluefin tuna. The population of tuna in and around southern Australia has been known to be in decline for the past 20 years.

In the 1960s, Yellowfin tuna were caught in vast purse-seine nets and a method known as "dolphin fishing." This developed because people noticed that schools of yellowfin tuna follow some kinds of dolphin.

Mortality via longline fishing is the principal threat to this species; a study conducted between 1988 and 1992 showed Gibson's Albatross was a significant bycatch species in the tuna longline fishery operating off New Zealand.

In the Pacific, these dolphins are killed incidentally in the course of seining for tuna. In 1970, about 400,000 were killed by U.S. vessels alone but that figure was reduced to 15,000-20,000 by 1978. Currently, incidental catch is limited by U.S.

The great white shark is known to live mainly on large fish such as tuna, marlin and broadbill swordfish. As well as these fast - swimming species it will also catch sluggish bottom-dwelling skates and rays.

Individuals have been observed feeding in association with tuna that chase suitable prey close to the surface of the ocean. During nonbreeding periods, flocks of Sooty Terns follow large schools of migratory tuna.

Spinner dolphins have been known to associate with spotted dolphins, yellowfin, and skipjack tuna (Klinowska, 1991). Spinner dolphins rest in shallow waters, usually inlets. They tend to go back to the same area each day.

It is one of the species that fisherman tend to follow as a means of finding yellowfin tuna, which swim with them. Consequently, millions of these dolphins have been killed after becoming entangled in fishing nets.

Five of the most commonly eaten fish that are low in mercury are shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish.
Another commonly eaten fish, albacore ("white") tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna.

An estimated 100,000 Albatrosses, of various different species, are thought to be killed every year by illegal fishing in the Southern Ocean, predominantly for Tuna.

The Pantropical Spotted Dolphin swims with tuna such as yellowfin tuna. Millions of these dolphins have been killed around the world after becoming entangled in fishing nets.

In 1990, a program to label tuna cans "Dolphin Safe" (certifying that no dolphins were encircled to catch tuna) began, reducing dolphin deaths in tuna nets by 97 percent.

Makos eat schooling fish, including tuna, herring, mackerel, swordfish, and porpoise. They are opportunistic feeders, eating just about anything.

Threats to Survival
: Predators include sea turtles, ocean sunfish, spade fish, tuna, swordfish, and other large fish. Humans, particularly in some Asian countries, capture and eat dried non-venomous jellyfish.

A fish is a water-dwelling vertebrate with gills. Most are cold-blooded, though some, such as some species of tuna and shark, are warm-blooded.
There are over 29,000 species of fish, making them the most diverse group of vertebrates.
