Turtle tagging in Kenya
WWF, in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, officially launched the sea turtle satellite radio telemetry program in Kiunga.

Turtles are quiet, calm, and slow-moving. Consequently they don't instill the cautious concerns that some folks have when dealing with other types of reptiles.

Turtles are reptiles.
Turtles live in the water and have flippers for swimming.
Turtles can swim as fast as humans can run on land.

Turtles are aquatic or terrestrial reptiles that have horny toothless jaws and a bony or leathery shell into which the head, limbs, and tail can be withdrawn in most species. They have dry scaly skin and enjoy basking in the sun. All turtles lay eggs.

Turtles are a wonderful animal to keep as pets. Though they aren't cuddly, and won't play fetch, they are still cute and great pets.

Turtles are classified in 12 families. The Northern Hemisphere's largest family is that of common freshwater turtles (Emydidae), which includes about a third of all turtle species and is abundant in S and E Asia, E North America, and Central America.

Turtles and tortoises usually have an optimal temperature range between 71 and 86ºF. Tortoises from arid desert regions are usually on the higher end of this range, and species from dense jungle habitats will often be toward the lower end.

Turtles
There are more than 15 species of turtles that call Arkansas home. The groups are bottom walkers, baskers, softshells and box turtles.

Turtles can be effective biological monitors and environmental indicators with wide-ranging applicability by facilitating biodetection of contaminants occurring at low levels.

Turtles are easily recognized by their shells and have not changed much in the past 200 million years. Turtles can be classified in three basic categories. Turtles generally spend most of their time in the water.

Turtles
Many turtle species are endangered today. Turtles are cold-blooded and have a shell which protects their bodies.

Box turtles live on land. The bottom shell is hinged, allowing them to close up like a box when threatened. Lifespans of 30-40 years are common and some live to be over one hundred years of age.

This turtle has a very slight raised ridge (keel) that runs down its back. Its carapace (top shell) is olive brown and is patterned with fine yellow lines that look like a road map.

This turtle lives in ponds, lakes, marshes, and in slow-moving rivers that have soft, muddy bottoms.

Turtle Doves Symbolize True Love
There’s a strong symbolic link between Turtle Doves and lovers. Because mated pairs stay together over many years, and possibly for life, the birds were long associated with love and faithfulness.

Turtles are among the longest living animals on earth. Several species of turtles can live for several decades. With this longevity also comes a negative side.

Sea turtles (Chelonioidea) are turtles found in all the world's oceans with the exception of the Arctic Ocean, and some species travel between oceans.

Box turtles are live on land; they are found in a wide variety of moist, warm wooded regions in the eastern USA. In hot weather they will burrow in the mud, swamps, and leaves of the forest, coming out only to look for food after heavy rains.

Sea turtles are characterized by a long, streamlined shell. Depending on the species, sea turtles color range can be olive-green, yellow, greenish-brown, reddish-brown, or black. Limbs and flippers are adapted for swimming.

Box turtles may cross the road for a variety of reasons, and once they have decided to go somewhere, little can get in their way. They have an exceptional sense of direction, and can return to a home area from miles away.

Sea turtles, who are among the oldest creatures on earth, have remained essentially unchanged for 110 million years; however, they face an uncertain future.
