A Tyrant Flycatcher, the male White-headed Marsh-tyrant is quite distinct in appearance. It is slightly crested, black with the entire head and upper chest white and with a yellow lower mandible.
All tyrant flycatchers in the genus Empidonax, called empids out of either affection or frustration, are suboscine songbirds with olive upperparts, pale throats and bellies, and whitish wing-bars and eye-rings.
The tyrant flycatchers (Tyrannidae) occur throughout North and South America. They are now considered the largest family of birds on Earth, with around 400 species.
