(vls´rp´´tr) [Gr.,=swift robber], swift bipedal carnivorous dinosaur of the late Cretaceous period. It was relatively small, being approximately 6 ft (1.8 m) long.

 


Velociraptor highlights many of the numerous similarities between dinosaurs and birds, which go far beyond the skin-deep appearance of feathers. Like birds, Velociraptor had hollow bones, tended nests of eggs, and probably behaved in similar ways.

Velociraptors were made famous in the film 'Jurassic Park', though they were a little less impressive in reality, standing not much taller than domestic turkeys. A famous fossil has one locked in battle with a Protoceratops.

Those of us from generation Jurassic Park can't help but think of the terrifying dinosaurs nicknamed "raptors," horribly Hollywoodified versions of Velociraptor that were as it turns out, way too naked.

Argus monitors are like velociraptors on all fours! They hunt for prey by keying in on movement, chasing it down and overpowering it. Insects, fish, frogs, snakes, birds and small mammals are all on the dinner menu of this nondiscriminate feeder.

With the ability to run on their hind legs, these Velociraptors of the desert are easily recognized by the two black neck bands. There are bars and lots of little white spots on the back.
