Vulture is a name given to a group of 16 species that are found in the Old World (Europe, Asia, Africa).

Vultures are large, short-tailed, solitary birds of prey. They feed on carrion (dead animals). Vultures have a long life span compared to most other birds; they can live up to 30 years in captivity.

Vultures
The English word 'vulture' comes from the Latin vultur, which in turn may be derived from vellere, which means 'to pluck or tear,' describing how these birds remove bits of flesh from carrion. The related vellus means fleece or skin.

The Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) is a common scavenger across the southeastern United States southward all the way to South America.

Vultures have keen eyesight. It is believed they are able to spot a three-foot carcass from four miles away on the open plains. In some species, when an individual sees a carcass it begins to circle above it.

Vultures are in trouble across the world. Of the 21 species included in this category, 8 are threatened with extinction and 3 more are considered 'near threatened' by the IUCN's Red List.

Vultures are scavengers, meaning they eat animals that have died. Some vultures eat only large carcasses. However, the Lappet-faced vulture will also eat smaller items, including living prey.

Vultures, sometimes mistakenly called "buzzards", feed primarily on carrion. They will also eat garbage and decaying vegetation. Turkey Vultures do occasionally prey on birds and small animals.

Vultures are a bird prey and can found in many different parts of the world. They do not hunt their own prey, instead they wait for another animal like a lion to kill an animal and they come and feed on the pieces the lion doesn't want.
