Mammal. Warthogs are members of the pig family. Their curved tusks are used to dig up roots and can grow into dangerous weapons. During fights, their faces are protected by two protruding pads on each side, called warts.
WARTHOG & PREDATORS
The warthog makes its den either under a rock or in a sheltered burrow, but, more often, it will sleep and breed in abandoned aardvark dens. When the family enters the underground den, the young climb down head first.
Warthogs can run up to 30 mph (48 kph). Instead of fighting an enemy, warthogs will generally run away and often hide in an abandoned den.

The Warthog (Phacochoerus aethiopicus) is an animal of the open woodlands and grasslands of southern Africa. It is a curious looking creature with a massive head with conspicuous tusks.
Warthogs are generally associated with sub-tropical, open, degraded grassland plains, flood plains, marshland areas and, more particularly, the ring-zone surrounding waterholes.
Warthogs live in open country in central and southern Africa. Unlike most others in the pig family, warthogs are almost exclusively graminivorous (grass-eating) and are highly diurnal.
Warthogs are members of the same family as domestic pigs, but present a much different appearance.
Warthogs live in family groups of a female and her young. Sometimes another female will join the group. Males normally live by themselves, only joining the groups to mate.
The warthog moves on the wrists while searching for food; wide calluses have developed on the wrists as an adaptation to this type of locomotion.
The extant warthog range extends discontinuously across the Sahelian zones and Guinea savannas from Mauritania and Ethiopia, as far south as Namibia and northern South Africa (Wilson & Reeder, 1993; Oliver, 1993).
