Studies on water shrew have suggested that they may have venomous saliva, which serves to immobilise the prey. Bites to humans produces a burning pain that may last for a few days.

Water Shrew (Sorex palustris)
There are only a few mammals in Michigan that live exclusively in wetland habitats. One is the tiny (6 inch) water shrew, a black "mouselike" animal with a long tail and large hind feet.

Water Shrew Habits
Territory. The water shrew usually lives alone and each one occupies a territory which it fiercely defends from other shrews. Fighting is common and shrill squeals can sometimes be heard as a territorial dispute takes place.

Reported from Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire & Worcester counties. Listed as "Special Concern".

The northern water shrew is "large", up to one-half ounce, and about six inches long, though half its length is tail. As the water shrew swims, it seems to run over the water. It is also an excellent diver.

The water shrew of Canada and N United States, Sorex palustris, is adapted to aquatic living and can actually walk on the surface of water for a short distance. There are other aquatic shrews, of several genera, in Europe and Asia.
