Waterbuck
Taxonomy Kobus ellipsiprymnus [Ogilby, 1833]. Citation: Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1833:47. Type locality: South Africa, between Lataku (near Kuruman) and W coast of Africa, N of Orange River, on Molopo River.

The waterbuck has a long-haired, often shaggy brown-gray coat that emits a smelly, greasy secretion thought to be for waterproofing.

The waterbuck's habitat furnishes them with a year-round source of food. Mainly grazers, they consume types of coarse grass seldom eaten by other grazing animals and occasionally browse leaves from certain trees and bushes.

Most waterbuck species have experienced declining numbers due to uncontrolled hunting.

Africa is the home of most antelopes, including the bushbuck ,waterbuck , lechwe, marshbuck , impala , or palla, kudu, nyala , springbuck , bongo .

In the wild, their most important prey are medium-sized hoofed animals such as gazelles, impalas and waterbucks. Having eaten their fill, cheetahs rarely return to the kill and will eat carrion only under dire circumstances.

Some antelopes include the gazelle, eland, impala, springbok, klipspringer, oryx, saiga, waterbuck, suni, hartebeests, topi, nyala, bongo, dik-dik, kob, duiker, gemsbok, etc. They are hunted by lions, leopards, wild dogs, and other predators.

Leopards are the most successful hunters of the cat family. Their prey include Impala, Bushbuck, Warthog and also the young of Wildbeest, Kudu and Waterbuck. Rodents, ground birds, monkeys, baboons, frogs and fish, also make part of their diet.

Post mature bulls tend to become solitary and often associate with other game species such as kudu, waterbuck and very small impala groups.
