The Alabama Waterdog, Necturus alabamensis, is found in muddy-bottomed streams in the western panhandle. It is dark brown to black with small dark spots. It has four toes on each foot and a small ridge on its tail. It may reach a length of 8.75".

Mudpuppies (also called waterdogs) are aquatic salamanders. Mudpuppies never lose their gills and spend their entire lives underwater. Adults have bright red external gills that expand or contract depending on how much oxygen is in the water.

Effective baits are waterdogs, liver, blood bait, shad, shrimp, anchovies, stink baits, hot dogs, minnows and worms. Contrary to myth, the "whiskers" are harmless to touch and used only to smell, taste and feel as it forages for food.

In the time of the Aztecs, axolotls (the name is derived from Atl=water and Xolotl=dog or Waterdog) provided food for the people and were also used to cure diseases such as consumption.

Mudpuppies, also called waterdogs, are one of only a few salamanders that make noise. They get their name from the somewhat embellished notion that their squeaky vocalizations sound like a dog's bark.
