Western Painted Turtle C. p. bellii was described by Gray in 1831. They are found from Canada and the northwestern United States south to Wisconsin, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, and Arizona.

Midland Painted turtle (Chrysemys picta marginata) in Lower Peninsula has narrow plastral blotch. Western Painted turtle (C. p. belli), with expanded plastral blotch, intergrades with Midland throughout the Upper Peninsula.
It is probably the most abundant turtle in the state, persisting in heavily urbanized landscapes and severely degraded wetlands. There are two subspecies, the Western Painted Turtle, Chrysemys picta bellii, and the Midland Painted Turtle, C. p.
