DESCRIPTION: Eastern coachwhips are nonpoisonous snakes belonging to the family Colubridae. This family contains the majority of living snakes and is distributed essentially worldwide.

' It is perhaps an alteration of the Sinhalese word henakandaya, meaning 'whip snake', or alternatively, the Tamil word anaikondran, which means 'elephant killer'.

This species is also called a Red Racer or Whip Snake.
Habitats
Coachwhips can be found in dry, rocky areas, including cedar glades, exposed rock formations, and rocky hillsides. They are also found on the edges of woodlands with nearby fields.

They feed on small skinks and because of their shy nature and small fangs a bite from one of these snakes is an unlikely event. They are found throughout Tasmania where they are also called Whip snakes.
