Pacific White-sided Dolphin

The Pacific White-sided Dolphin, also known as the Lag, White-striped Dolphin, and Hookfin Porpoise, is sometimes seen in herds of up to several thousand but usually travels in groups of 10 to 50.

The Pacific White-sided Dolphin is also known as the "White-striped Dolphin" or "Hookfin Porpoise". It's cousin is the "Atlantic White-sided Dolphin", which is very similar but slightly larger.

Pacific white-sided dolphins have a robust body and are also called "white-striped dolphins" because of the light stripe present on both sides of their bodies. Their mouths contain 84-130 sharp teeth that are slightly curved.

Pacific white-sided dolphins have torpedo-shaped bodies which help them move quickly through water. Body length of Pacific white-sided dolphins ranges from 150 to 310 cm.

Atlantic White-sided Dolphin
The dolphin most likely to be seen on Stellwagen Bank trips is the Atlantic White-sided Dolphin.. Named for the white patch on its side, it has a gray ribbon like strip that extends from above the eye to the tail.

The Atlantic white-sided dolphin can be found in the temperate and sub-polar regions of the North Atlantic, from West Greenland, Iceland and the Barents Sea south to Cape Cod in the west and Ireland and the North Sea in the East.

White-beaked dolphins have similar habits to Atlantic white-sided dolphins, and live in similar cold-water regions of the North Atlantic. They eat fish, squid, octopus, and crustaceans. They are seen in small groups, but also in schools of 500.
