White-tailed Deer are one of two deer species that occur in the Calgary area, usually in moderately high numbers. Because both deer species are similar in size and shape, they sometimes present identification difficulties.

The White-Tailed Deer is a long-legged, fast-moving mammal. The genus and species of the White-Tailed Deer are Odocoileus virginianus. This deer is found over most of North and Central America and northern parts of South America.

Behavior:
When deer are alarmed, the tails are held erect and waved back and forth like a flag, signaling a warning to other deer.
