White Pelicans occur commonly throughout Africa on large areas of inland water but are uncommon on the coast. In East Africa vast numbers breed in the swamps of southern Tanzania. They are very abundant on Lake Nakuru in Kenya.

 


Nesting White Pelicans show a tinge of pink in their plumage. The American White Pelican has feathered cheeks, unlike those of other species.

White pelicans live in colonies that consist of hundreds of pairs. They migrate to nesting areas in the spring months and nest from April through early June and often use the same location to nest for years.

White pelicans are migratory birds. They breed in inland Canada and in scattered sites in the northern United States. In the U.S., one of their larger breeding sites is Minnesota.

White pelicans feed differently than brown pelicans. They do not plunge dive as brown pelicans do, instead white pelicans float on the surface, submerge their heads and scoop up fish.

American White Pelicans weigh about 16.4 pounds (7,500 grams), and measure over five feet in length, with a huge 9-foot wingspan.

American White Pelican nesting colonies are found on remote, treeless islands and are distributed mostly from the Canadian prairie, south to southern California and the Texas Gulf Coast. A large proportion of the birds nest in Canada.

The American white pelican doesn't dive into the water for its food like the brown pelican. It floats on the water and scoops up fish and water in its pouch. It holds its heads up and drains out the water and then swallows the fish.

The American White Pelican is one of the largest birds found in South Dakota. They are migrants through most of the state, but do nest in some of the northeastern counties.

The white pelicans often fish in groups. They will form a line to chase schools of small fish into shallow water, and then scoop them up.

Hurrican damage was much greater on Captiva. This may be why more of the pelicans have moved to Sanibel.

The Brown Pelican is the only non-white pelican in the world. The most distinguished feature of the pelican is its huge bill and expandable pouch. The bird's height can reach 50 inches and its windspan up to 6 1/2 feet.

The black feathers do not extend to the secondaries like in a White Pelican or Wood Stork. Both Wood Stork and White Pelican tend to soar much higher and with stiffer bodies and wings. White Ibis fly low with quick, noisy wingbeats.

The species most similar to the Brown Pelican is the White Pelican. Both of these species have the distinctive pelican bill shape, but the White Pelican has white overall coloration and an orange bill.

In flight, white pelicans are a spectacular sight. Almost always in groups, they fly gracefully in precisely spaced lines or formations, flapping slowly in unison half a dozen times, then gliding, then flapping and gliding again.

The winter resident population of the American White Pelican varies from year to year. It is found along the coast and sometimes at large inland lakes. Flocks forage by swimming together and herding fish.

They occur mostly in warm regions, though breeding ranges reach 45° south (Australian Pelican, P. conspicillatus) and 60° North (American White Pelicans, P. erythrorhynchos, in western Canada).

Pelicans do not store fish in their pouch, but simply use it to catch them and then tip it back to drain out water and swallow the fish immediately. The American white pelican can hold some 3 gallons (11 1/2 liters) of water in its bill.
