Wild boars roam the oak forests and shrublands of Europe, Asia and north Africa.

Wild boars rest in tight groups with bodily contact. The resting place, used several times before being abandoned, is made of numerous troughs lined with leaves and branches.

Wild Boar Habits
Territory: the wild boar lives in a family party that has a territory of 10 - 20 sq km but in the autumn, family groups come together to form herds of up to 50 females and youngsters.

Wild boars are covered in a scant coat of coarse, bristle-like hairs ranging from dark gray to brown. Head and body length ranges from 900 to 1800 mm, tail length is about 300 mm, and shoulder height is 550 to 1100 mm.

Wild boars are also called "razorbacks" because the hair along the backbone stands erect when the boar is agitated. They tend to retreat when approached but can become vicious when cornered.
Natural predators include man, bears, and panthers.

Wild boar (sus scrofa) forage for pine nuts, and in turn are the main prey for the Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) and Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis). Also found in these forests are brown bear, asiatic bear and lynx.

In the Russian Far East, there is a long tradition of sport hunting, of red deer and wild boar, which are two of the major prey items. The red deer are basically like our elk, two of the major prey items for tigers in those areas.

By introduction, wild boar and feral swine have been established in North and South America as well as Australia -- often with disastrous results.
