The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus), also called African Hunting Dog or Painted Hunting Dog, is a mammal of the Canidae family, and thus related to the domestic dog.

Wild dogs are strict carnivores, meaning they only eat meat. The dominant prey of the wild dog is Thomson's gazelle, wildebeest, impala, duiker and reedbuck.

Wild dogs are social, communally hunting carnivores, which live in small cohesive packs typically composed of a dominant breeding pair, a number of non-breeding adults, and their dependent offspring.

No two wild dogs are marked exactly the same, making it easy to identify different individuals. Why such a pattern should develop, and how it serves the hunting dog, has long intrigued scientists.

African Wild Dogs are very social animals that live in packs of 5-20 individuals; rarely as many as 60. They fill the ecological role or niche of the wolf in Africa.

African wild dogs hunt in formidable, cooperative packs of 6 to 20 (or more) animals. Larger packs were more common before the dogs became endangered.

African wild dogs hunt antelope, zebras, wildebeest, springboks, gazelles and impala.

The survival of the African wild dog is endangered by growing human populations, which have decreased or degraded its habitat, and that of its similarly threatened prey.

Ginsberg & Macdonald (1990) give a detailed picture of the distribution, status and ecology of this species. In the last few years, wild dog populations have been constantly monitored in most of the range of their occurrence.

African wild dogs seem to detest spotted hyenas almost as much as lions do. If they catch one alone, especially near their dens or their kills, they'll mob and harass it, to the point of blood being drawn.

Bengal tigers have also been known to take other predators such as leopards, wolves, jackals, foxes, crocodiles and dholes (a species of wild dog) as prey, although these predators are not typically a part of the Bengal tigers diet.
