The Western Wood-Pewee and the nearly identical Eastern Wood-Pewee (Contopus virens) are closely related, and along with the Tropical Pewee (C. cinereus), are regarded as a superspecies by some taxonomists.

The Western Wood-Pewee (Contopus sordidulus) breeds across much of western North America from Alaska south into Mexico. It is a common flycatcher in many locations and its voice is one of the familiar summer bird songs to many people within its range.
