Description
In the breeding season, the male Wood Duck has iridescent green and purple head with long drooping green crest. There is a thin white line from the bill, over the eye, to the back of the crest.

The Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) is a widespread and fairly common duck of much of North America.
Wood ducks live on the Atlantic coast from Canada to Florida and inland by river and ponds. They also like swamps and marshes. Most ducks in Canada will migrate to the southeastern USA for the winter and return in the summer.

Wood Duck: Small tree duck with brown back, white throat, and purple-brown breast with white flecks grading to a white belly; flanks are buff-yellow.
Wood Ducks nest in tree cavities near the water or as far as a mile away, sometimes as high as 60 feet off the ground. Wood Duck nest boxes are also commonly used. The female creates a soft nest using down feathers from her breast.

Wood ducks nest in hollow trees. Female wood ducks pluck down from their breasts to line the nest, where they lay 10 to 15 eggs during the spring; hatching takes place 28 to 31 days later. Not Ducklings begin to fly eight to 10 weeks after hatching.
Wood ducks feed on acorns primarily, but also seeds from plants such as cypress and hickory and green plant matter. They will also eat insects and aquatic invertebrates.
