The female takes prey up to wood pigeon size, but the smaller male does not catch anything bigger than the mistle thrush. In summer, about 40% of a sparrowhawk's diet is fledglings.

In the summer of 2001 I had a first - feeding on spilled grain 20 yards from our garden gate I saw a mixed flock with every species of British dove: Turtledove, stock dove, rock dove, wood pigeon and collared dove.

In its flight, behaviour, and voice, which is more of a dovecot coo than the phrase of the Wood Pigeon, it is a typical pigeon.

In Europe the Wood Pigeon is commonly shot as a game bird, while Rock Pigeons were originally domesticated as a food species, and many breeds were developed for their meat-bearing qualities.

We did see quite a few birds including Wood Pigeon, Tomtit, Fantail, Gannet, Bellbird and Hector's Dolphins from the beach. Carl is a very well trained guide and I enjoyed this walk.

In Europe the turtledove, rock pigeon or dove, stock dove, and ringdove or wood pigeon are common. The rock dove, Columba livia, of temperate Europe and W Asia is the wild progenitor of the common street and domestic pigeons.

All the birds are native and range from the tui (a passerine), kereru (a large wood pigeon), and endangered blue duck to kaka (a rare parrot), kakariki (yellow-crowned parakeet).
