Cichlids are members of a group known as the Labroidei along with the wrasses Labridae, damselfish Pomacentridae, and surfperches Embiotocidae. This family is both large and diverse.

Close relatives of the wrasse, parrot fish are abundant in and around the tropical reefs of all the world's oceans. There are about 80 identified species, ranging in size from less than 1 to 4 feet (30 to 120 centimeters) in length.

Many coral reef fish species, such as wrasses, parrotfish, and angelfish may start out as one sex (usually female) and change to the other over time.

The bluntnose stingray is found near cleaning stations where they are attended to by the bluehead wrasse and Spanish hogfish. They have a well-developed serrated spine and are capable of inflicting a painful laceration.

They are often found with Remoras attached to their undersides. These scavenger fish feed from the mantas leftovers. It is also common to find manta rays at "cleaning station" where fish like the wrasse will groom them.
