Yellow-crowned Night-Heron: Medium-sized, stocky heron with gray body and brown-and-white mottled wings. Face is black and white; crown is pale yellow and sweeps back as a plume. Eyes are large and red. Bill is heavy and black.

The Yellow-crowned Night-heron occurs in most of the eastern half of the United States during the breeding season and in most southern coastal areas all year. Some individuals winter south of the United States to southern Panama.

The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, despite its name, often feeds during the day. It usually roosts in tall trees during the day. It also nests in tall trees sometimes in urban areas.

Juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron has smaller spots on greater secondary coverts, smaller spots on head and neck, thicker bill, and longer legs.
